Laurie Akers is a Chicago-based, nationally acclaimed Jewish music artist, composer and graduate of the University of Michigan’s esteemed Musical Theatre program. After an 8-year career in New York as a Broadway touring musical theater performer, Laurie began her pursuit of the cantorate. As a celebrated Jewish Rock Radio artist, Laurie serves as the host of Chicago’s Jewish Rock Radio Live Across America and the Chicago Jewish Community Flagpole concert series. Laurie’s compositions can be found in numerous anthologies including Transcontinental Music Publication’s Chazak V’Ematz: Jewish Songs of Hope and Protest, Shabbat Anthology IX, Nigun Anthology Volume III and the upcoming TMP High Holiday Anthology I. Her composition, Stand Strong, served as the anthem for the March of Our Lives rally in Chicago, the RAC’s (Religious Action Center) Illinois launch, and has been included in numerous social justice concerts throughout the country including the 2019 Consultation of Conscience in Washington D.C. Laurie’s diverse musical performances include participating as a concert soloist alongside Keith Urban (tour) and Bernadette Peters (Broadway Barks) and as a featured artist at the 2019 URJ Biennial Conference. Laurie proudly serves as the cantorial soloist at Congregation Or Shalom in suburban Chicago. In addition, she frequently serves as a guest artist at congregations throughout the country. She is currently pursuing Cantorial certification through the Cantors Assembly’s CICA program. Laurie recently released her first album, The Key of We, which can found on ITunes, Spotify and CDBaby.
